The list of the top 10 ecommerce companies in the world is currently dominated by Chinese and American companies, with six of the 10 coming from the US and China. This should come as no surprise, given that the US and China are currently two biggest ecommerce markets in the world.
Currently topping the list of top ecommerce companies is ecommerce giant Amazon. Its market value stands at over 932 billion, which is more than double that of its closest rival. It is also more than the combined total of the remaining nine on the top 10 list.
Amazon’s revenue has been growing steadily for over a decade. In 2018, its revenues reached over $232 billion, a 31 percent increase from 2018. Incidentally, its founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, is also the wealthiest man in the world.
The second-biggest ecommerce company is China’s Alibaba with a market value of $438.38 billion. While it still has some distance to go before it catches up with Amazon, it is charting a pretty impressive growth path. In fact, Jack Ma’s company has doubled its net revenue in the two years spanning 2017 to 2019 from approximately $23 billion to $54.5 billion.
As the two biggest online retailers, Amazon and Alibaba’s ecommerce dominance is irrefutable. Their combined market value of nearly 1.4 trillion makes up more than 80 percent of the total market value of the top 10 ecommerce companies in the world.
South Africa’s Naspers is third on the list with a market value of just over $100 billion. As one of the largest tech investors in the world, the Cape Town-based firm is also Africa’s most valuable company. Its business exploits include numerous investments in ecommerce firms across the globe from Latin America and Eastern Europe to India and the Middle East.
Fourth and fifth on the list are Kering and Ebay with $75.69 billion and $34.43 billion in market value respectively. The French-based Kering is also an international luxury group that owns high-end brands including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen.
The top 10 ecommerce companies in the world are scattered across five different continents, with three from North America, two each from Asia, Europe, and South America, and one from Africa.
