Instagram is an amazing social media platform. Brands, on average, receive much higher engagement on Instagram than on any other platform. Sometimes it’s hard to know what kind of Instagram posts to make. That’s where this quick list of 10 ideas comes in handy. It’s filled with so many different companies. I’m certain you’ll find something to your liking here. I’d also like to recommend our post on social media marketing for small businesses as well as tips on advertising on Instagram.
1. Products in use
This is by far the best idea for eCommerce stores. When you’re selling products online, like apparel, you should feature them regularly in your social media campaigns. Instagram posts are a great platform for this. There is a wide range of companies who feature their products in the majority of their post.
Take Lululemon for example. They include their workout wear in every other Instagram post. Their photography and videography are high quality. The captions reflect the company’s mission of providing a better life through working out.
Next, take a look at Warby Parker. They have a variety of images of their sunglasses. Sometimes they post cheeky Instagram posts of dogs wearing their glasses. It’s a lot of fun and they get thousands of likes on their Instagram posts.
Asos post creative Instagram posts of their clothing. Sometimes they feature a single item against a themes backdrop like the above post of their sneakers. There is not much to it except a creative and well-photographed image. Posting shots of your products is the easiest way to come with Instagram posts ideas.
I’m also going to include Herschel Supply under this post idea category. They take it a step further and post a lot of images of people traveling with their bags. Their Instagram posts are made up of people on mountains, packing in their hotel rooms or on beaches. It’s a big part of their customer base.
2. Behind the scenes
Another cool Instagram post idea is to show off the scenes of your business. It might be a little bit hard when you don’t deal with the merchandise directly. But, it’s still doable.
Ikea’s Instagram has a variety of posts from their factories, design studio to showrooms. Again, the photos are well done. The lighting is, well, light and bright. It makes for great images. And it shows different aspects of how Ikea comes to make and sell their furniture.
As a drop shipper you can show off your office, how you maintain your business, what your team is like – if you have one – or how you select your items. You can also show photos of the samples you receive. Walt Disney Studios’ Instagram posts are a lot of fun. Some of them include little bits of their movie merchandise too.
Another great idea for Instagram posts is to upload videos. One of my favourite things to follow on Instagram is quick videos on how things are done or how things work. For dropshipping, you can show off videos on how to pair different pieces to make a good outfit.
BuzzFeed has many different accounts. One of them is called BuzzFeed Tasy where they post short videos on how to cook quick and yummy recipes. They don’t actually sell anything. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them. Their format for videos is very low-key but well done.
Smile Direct Club does sell invisible braces. For such an awkward and unpleasant product, they market it well. Smile Direct Club’s Instagram is friendly, pleasant and cute. Their Instagram posts are everything you would never associate with orthodontics. It goes to show that good creativity can go a long way to engage people on Instagram.
4. Themes and styles
If you’re willing to dedicate to a specific style or subject of photos go with a theme. Regularity can work wonders.
Take Bloom and Wild, for example. I’ve mentioned them in another post on Oberlo about how top brands use Instagram. Check it out if you’d like. I’m mentioning Bloom and Wild again because they don’t have a single Instagram post without flowers.
Or, take a look at Pistil Nursery’s Instagram. They are a specialty plant show. Again, their Instagram posts are only filled with gorgeous house plants.
If plants or flowers aren’t your thing, take a look at Lauren Aston Designs. Lauren knits custom designs ranging from pillows to blankets to hats. Her Instagram posts are filled only with her work. Sometimes it’s finished work, sometimes it’s work in progress. Yet, there is always a piece of yarn in her Instagram posts.
If you want to inspire you followers consider posting quotes. You can get creative in how you design the Instagram post with the background, font choice and, of course, the quote itself.
Refinery29 is an online women’s lifestyle magazine. Their Instagram is made up of various posts. Some of them include amazing quotes to get their followers to feel good about themselves in their own skin. Some of their quotes are tiny think pieces as well.
LORNA JANE sells active wear. Every now and again, they post a great inspirational quote to keep their Instagram followers feeling good. Some of their quotes are tiny think pieces as well. I think that would work very well for apparel companies as well. Helping people feel great about their self-expression with fashion.
Comedy is always welcomed by people. You don’t have to post anything outrageously hilarious. You can be clever, cheeky or cheesy too.
Last Halloween, Staples shared a bunch of Instagram posts related to the holiday. Most of them were a play on office supplies. Even selling office supplies can be made interesting.
Oreo is a constant Instagram winner. Their marketing team must get really into creating great content. Oreo’s Instagram posts are cheesy and funny. The above video of them playing off the saying “Don’t cry over spilled milk” is great!
Lifestyle posts are made for Instagram. They usually feature the product, whatever it may be, in its intended setting. For apparel, it could be a girl wearing a party dress at a fancy bar or a bikini on a beach.
One of my favourite Instagram accounts is Urban Outfitters. Although they sell a wide range of items from clothing to pillow cases, they show them off well on Instagram. I had a hard time choosing an image. I settled for one featuring a bedroom set. I bet you they sell the girl’s pajamas too.
Another good example is 5TH. They sell watches. Most of their Instagram posts feature their watch – which is a great theme by the way. But if you look closely as some of their posts, you’ll notice a lot of them have an amazing background. Of women in a cafe, reading a book at home, on a boat sailing or a couple hiking a waterfall.
I’m against using sex in advertising and marketing. It’s cheap and usually completely irrelevant. But, if you’re selling lingerie it might make sense to make things a little sexier.
Victoria’s Secret is not afraid to use sexuality in their advertising. It more or less helped make the company what it is today. After all, they are extremely known for it. But, they do it pretty well. If you think you can pull it off, go for it.
9. Healthy foods
If you’re selling activewear, it’s not a long leap to start featuring Instagram posts related to being healthy. This can range from topics such as lifestyle, exercising or eating right.
Califia Farms sells milk and cold brew coffee. But that doesn’t stop them from posting Instagram posts on healthy eating in general. They include posts that have fiber and whole grain breakfasts as well as natural yogurt parfaits, fruits or smoothies.
If you’re feeling creative or artistic, use that to fuel a beautiful art direction for you Instagram posts. Photography doesn’t have to be mundane. See if you can create a great display of the products and have fun with it.
That’s exactly what Sugarfina is doing. They don’t just post photos of their candy. They are having fun with it. They post very pastel and elegant photos regularly. They are beautiful. It works for Sugarfina too because they have almost a million followers on Instagram.
